Not long ago my daughter and I attended a retirement party for Mike Templeton from the Mesquite Arts Center. As we sipped our wine and enjoyed the festivities, I caught sight of this fella with long gray hair. He certainly stood out in the crowd and for some reason, he looked familiar. We struck up a conversation with him and his wife, and before long, I thought that she too looked very familiar. After chatting for a while, I realized that I had photographed both of them at the Mesquite Cemetery historical presentation where the actors dress in period costume and stand by the tombstone of a deceased Mesquite resident and tell that person’s story.
Suddenly it all came back. Tony was in the Civil War and dressed appropriately, and his wife was dressed as a school teacher as each stood at their respective tombstones. And then I thought that Tony would be a great choice to add to my 100 Strangers Project. When I told him of the project, he graciously said he would be pleased to be a part of it.
The light in the reception room was not conducive to shooting a portrait but at the end of the hall, I could see the late afternoon light coming in through the door, so we went to the end of the hall. Being the actor that he is, he struck a pose and I took several photos and I liked this one the best. It was taken in color but I do like the looks of the black and white image.
If Mesquite again does the cemetery meander, it would be fun for the club to go and shoot the event.
Here is a photo of Tony acting out his part at the cemetery…
This is fun Lala. Yes, I love the B&W too. Tony is such a good actor, would like to see him on his Civil War dress. It must be fun.
Well, what can I say about this picture? Nothing…. You are the best.
Thanks Tess! I just added a shot of Tony from the Civil War.
Oh my…. It looks so real. Wow!
Yes, a lovely monochrome image. The color is wonderful. The monochrome is equally wonderful in another way, it’s like snow on the mountain.
Does he do stage? I feel I’ve worked with him, sometime in the great dark past.
From what he related to me, much of his theater experience has come in a round-about way and many of his roles have been non-speaking roles. Here is his story:
GREAT shot, fun story! I love the angle of your photo as well! The cemetery meander would be fun to shoot! Thanks for adding the addendum photo!
Thanks Donna!
Fay,
Very nice B&W portrait!!! Tony looks like he can really play the part well. Sounds like a very interesting event to attend and shoot. I remember seeing some of your great images you took at this event previously! The women really do well at dressing up for their part too!!!
Thanks Lorraine. I think a lot of work goes into digging into the history and then presenting it in such a unique way.
I enjoyed learning how you overcame your lighting challenge and like your interesting tilt position you gave Tony. Always good stuff from you and I need more time to delve into it all here at the CWPC home.
Thanks rebeKah!
Nice photos. I really like B&W. The photo dressed in civil war attire looks so real. Great job as always
