September Challenge: Manipulating Your Photos… Entry #1 The American White Pelican

I received this first entry almost immediately after sending out the challenge for September. It is from Robin W. and she sent me this e-mail along with her photo.

“Me again, early again. I’m going to be away part of September so I wanted to get this finished. A  rookery of American White Pelicans has, in the past several years, selected White Rock Lake as their winter home, and I’ve had some fun shooting them.  It wasn’t long after getting this challenge when I knew I wanted them to be the subject.

I’m a child of chaos, the rookery is often chaotic, and I tried to make this collage as chaotic as possible while maintaining a theme of order.

At first I thought I’d just use PS to arrange the collage (use what you know, ya know), but decided to give Fay’s web site a try.  It was frustrating, and I learned some bitter lessons, including “Save” doesn’t mean an intermediate save and continue, but is more like the fixer in the dark room, you can’t change it after you save.  I started from scratch a few times.
But, in the end, it was more productive, and probably esthetically pleasant, than using PS would have been.  Eventually I had something I was okay to share.

  1. What’s up with the redundancy in the script? I would like a little elaboration on the middle egg-like shot. It is quite an attention grabber. How did you do it and what’s it called? And could we see the original shot? I thought the collage part was for extra credit and I just manipulated one photo. My favorite shots are the middle bottom take offs or landings and the top left log chat. I like collages like this that show many aspects of a subject. I admire Robin promptly getting the job done. Nice feature of the American White Pelican, Robin.

  2. This is neat. I love the middle egg looking one, and if you can share how you made this please.
Good job Robin, and bravo for always the early one to send a picture challenge.

  3. Robin,
I really like how you put this together. You really organized your chaos well. It is fun watching their antics! I also had difficulty with using the web site. I am glad I wasn’t the only one. Great job with this challenge!!

  4. Checking in late, sorry. We were riding through the south the past week or so. m We left Vicksburg about 11:00 this morning after getting very very wet, and got home tonight. I got some moonbow shots in Cumberland Falls Kentucky!!!

Thanks everyone. The middle egg I did in photoshop CS6. You have to assure the sides of the image will seam together rather well. Then you make it perfectly square, and skewing one edge isn’t going to hurt usually. Then flip it upside down and use Filter, Distort, Polar Coordinates to make it a circle.

Then you use normal tools to clean up where the two sides but together, rotate it if needed, etc.
