Hand Challenge: Entry #4 Hand Grown

As we have come to learn, Lorraine does not simply go out and snap a picture. There is always a story to go with it.

My story:
“When I make my trips to visit family in Kansas, one of my favorite things to do is take in the beauty of nature at my fathers house.
My father is an avid gardener. From herbs, vegetables and grape vines to fruit and nut trees, if it can grow in Kansas soil, you will find it at my fathers house. My fathers house is located in the city, but you wouldn’t know it once you enter his backyard oasis. He has approx 2 acres. It’s a mixture of dense foliage, gardens, and many various fruit trees. When I visit, my father and I go on the tour and he shows me his pride and joy. Its a very relaxing and enjoyable experience!

On this last visit, I took my camera and was just casually taking pictures when my father, standing behind me, got my attention. I turned around to see he had pulled off a leaf from his ginkgo tree. He just kinda slapped it into his hand and held it out to show me. Seeing how this heart-shaped leaf was laying in his hand just appealed to me and I quickly obtained an image of it. I never really had thought about the appealing aspect of photographing hands until I joined the CWPC and Fay mentioned to me about obtaining images of family members hands before I went on my trip.
This image will always be very special to me!”

  1. Lorraine,
I can well understand why this image will always be special!
Love the soft green background that plays up the leaf. And how symbolic that the leaf resembles the shape of a heart!
Good eye Lorraine and a beautiful story to go with it.

    • Thank you for your nice comments. I was surprised myself at how this turned out. It was a spontaneous thing that happened and I just snapped the shot at the moment. Had I hesitated to try to get a good image I might have missed out. I tend to hesitate trying to get a decent image and have missed out before. A lesson learned for me!

  2. Lorraine,
What a beautiful story. I love the stories that comes along with all of your pictures. Yes this picture is so precious. Love the blurring of the background and that you just focused on the leaf and your father’s hand. Good job as always.

    • Tess,
Thank you! I didn’t expect this to come out as sharp as it did. I was shooting in manuel exposure and this oppurtunity came up and I didn’t take the time to check my settings and it just happened to work out right. I really am enjoying taking photos and the suprises that come along sometimes. I see how far you have come and its inspiring for me!

    • Vickie,
I really didn’t pay that close attention to the light at the bottom. Now that you have pointed it out, I think it gives it more appeal. Thank you for your nice comments. Look forward to when we may happen to be going on the same outing!

  3. Lorraine,

I always enjoy your stories behind your pictures. Our pictures we are learning to take will stay with us for years to come. Especially ones that include family. Spontaneous pictures can sometimes be the best. Love your picture. The green is so pretty and so very special laying in your fathers hand

    • Debbie,
You are so kind! I learned from this image about how the spontaneous images can sometimes be the best. I really liked the greens in this image as well. I look forward to when we might happen to be going on the same outing!

  4. Lorraine~
This is a wonderful shot and story!
I love how you framed the hand in this shot! I played around a bit with my pic and wasn’t sure if i should shoot both hands, part of a hand etc… you know what I mean. This is my favorite part of your pic and I love seeing the wrinkles in his hand! Nice photo!!

    • Donna,
Thank you for your compliments. Its hard sometimes to make decisions about how much of the subject to include. I often have to make several tries to get what I feel looks alright. I lucked out this time , in that I didn’t take the time to try to figure anything out and just took the image and it all worked out for me. Look forward to another outing with you!
